Another metal song came on from the speakers above me. I look up at them. My eyes travel down and straight ahead to a figure that was approaching me. Ginger. She was coming at me with her mascara running down her cheeks, her head down, crying and wiping at her black tears. Her yellow, blond hair flew behind her from side to side. In her sleeveless, not-covering-her-stomach, David Bowie from The Hunger t-shirt and torn black skinny jeans and combat boots, she strides towards me with powerful steps. She was highly upset. Shit. What now? She bumps her arm against mines and turns to face me.
"She's a bitch," she exhales.
"Tangy?" I take a wild guess.
"Yeah, I caught her with some chick. They looked like they were on a date." I believed that Ginger was on the sensitive side. Tangy was always cheating on her.
"Maybe she was with a cousin," I say as I eye the bracelets on the bracelet rack.
"No, they were holding hands."
"Ouch."
"And kissing."
"Double ouch." I really didn't care. This wasn't the first time Tangy has cheated on Ginger. And I'm sure it won't be the last. "Where did you witness this scene?"
"In the food court."
"With so many people around?" I move on to the graphic t-shirts. Ginger follows behind me.
"Ugghhh, don't rub it in, Ek!" She leans up against the wall with her head back.
"I loved that bitch." I look over at her.
"You didn't step to her?" Ginger gets off the wall and walks over to me.
"If I did I would have caused a scene." She fiddles with her arm bracelets and then ruffles up her hair. "I probably look a hot mess. Look what the twat has done again." I look up and straight ahead, unintentionally catching the eyes of one of the sales guys. I look away and back at Ginger.
"So what the hell am I supposed to do about your situation?" She looks up at me. She wipes at her mascara, getting rid of the streaks.
"Nothing to do, I guess." She backs up a little then sits cross legged on the floor. This startles some of the customers who walk by, but the sales people shrug it off or didn't notice. I move on to the guys jeans. Walking over, I hear a loud crashing sound coming from near the front of the store. I stop to look over. 'Lo and behold, none other than Maurice. He starts to get up off the floor. A display of jewelry, make up, and other trinkets all spilled on the floor.
"I am so sorry," he says. He's high. I knew high Maurice more than anything. I sigh, I just wanted to do a little shopping.
"Bruh, it's not my fault that ya'll put your shit in crappy places. A nigga has no way to walk," he's talking to the salesman. He catches sight of me. "Eko! My nigga!" He steps over some nail polish and comes over to me.
"What's up, Maurice?"
"Nothin'. I'm just...high right now." I nod understandingly with him. "And I lost my twin." Okay, so in the beginning it was me, Ginger, Tangy, Maurice and Mel, Caleb, and Wes. Somehow we kind of drifted apart. I didn't care. We have cell phones and could meet back up whenever. I guess it kind of started at Zumiez.
ZUMIEZ
"Spank me, Eko," Mel asks of me.
"I don't want to," I answer. She twirles the belt at me. It has spikes on it.
"C'mon, I won't tell your boyfriend." I look over at Caleb who was nonchalantly looking through a rack of jeans. I knew this wasn't his scene. I look back at Mel. Five foot nothing, Mel.
"I'll call Maurice on you."
"He won't do shit, patna," she playfully shoves my arm. I smile and then with a quickness out of nowhere put her in a headlock. She screams. We could be heard over the rock music.
"Hey, guys, please stop or we're gonna have to ask you to leave." I let go of Mel but she shoves me a little. Behind the salesman's back, as he walks away, Mel sticks out her tongue at him. As I walk over to Caleb I notice Maurice making imaginary snow angels on the floor. And I see Wes actually trying on clothes.
"Hey," I say to Caleb. He looks up at me with a blank face, almost a bored expression.
"Wassup?"
"You look bored." I lean on the rack. He straightens up a little and clears his throat.
"Nah, not really," he continues to idly look at the jeans.
"I'm sorry I brought you along. If you didn't want to come then that was okay."
"It's cool, Ek." I look up at the wall. I met Caleb on my one little trip out to Section 1 a month ago. My friends and I are all from Section 3, so there was a difference in background between us. But still I was attracted to him when I first saw him. We met at a park. He had been playing a game of football while me and Ginger were just out there randomly smoking. I told her about how attracted I was to him, but Ginger never cared about anyone else's love life but her own. And she expected people to care about her's as well. Caleb had seen me in that park and he wasn't afraid to come up to me when he realized I was staring. It was so easy for us. We both knew what we wanted. So the relationship was long distanced at first. We lived different lives. None of his friends were like mines. He didn't associate with my crowd, but I brought him along on this trip to the mall anyways.
"I gotta pee." I look to my right. Tangy had said it and was walking passed. Ginger was on her tail. I watch Tangy turn around to her. "I'll be back. You don't have to follow me." We watch Tangy head out of the store.
"I'm done here, what about you?" I turn back to Caleb. He was looking at me. I stare into his hazel brown eyes. He recently had gotten a new fade and he looks cute in his plain white tee and jeans. He was like four inches taller than me and looked "harder" than me. I couldn't help being attracted to him. I never really had a boyfriend until him. I'm 17 and in high school. Caleb's 18 and was out of school. Besides him, I thought I was pretty good looking too. My skin was too pale for a mixed person's; I have to convince people that I'm black. Whereas Caleb was browner. Plus my eyes were a light shade of green, but I am black. Caleb didn't think I was at first.
I focus back on Caleb. I nod to him and look around the mall and try to locate everyone. Tangy was still gone. Ginger was right near me. But where was everyone else?
"Are you kidding me? Where the hell is Wes, Maurice, and Mel?
"I don't know," Ginger says.
"Well I'm leaving without them then." Ginger looks startled.
"You guys are leaving the mall?"
"No," Caleb replies. "We're just going to the next store."
"I'm waiting here for Tangy then."
"You do that, then meet us at..." I look at Caleb.
"Lids."
LIDS
I watch for a good while as Caleb tries on plenty of hats and talk to the black guys that were working there. This store is more of his scene and I was finally seeing a smile on his face. Though I felted like I was being ignored. I didn't understand the knowledge they were spitting to each other about the different caps but they talked with a lot of enthusiasm. I just leaned on the wall and waited for Ginger while listening to the rap song playing over the speakers. The store wasn't even an actual store. It's just a little indentation in the wall with all kinds of fitteds and caps hanging on the wall. We were basically inside the mall instead of inside a store.
"You looking for something?" Some guy asks me. I didn't pay him much mind.
"Nah." I could sense him still staring at me. I finally look over at him and he was staring at me until his eyes were drawn to something pass me. I look over my shoulder as well. It was Maurice. Smoking what looks like a blunt, riding a skateboard in the mall. Kids and women were shrieking with shock and laughter. I notice the black people around Lids found this not amusing and even had confused and disgusted looks on their faces. Maurice flew by and about 15 seconds later mall security men were running after him.
"Ain't that your boy?" I look at Caleb and nod.
"Rhetorical question, don't you thing?" Sometimes I can come off sounding like a dick but I don't mean to. It just comes out like that. Caleb was still new to my language. He just nods and walks away. I sigh and lean back up against the wall again. My eyes happen to have wandered over to what Caleb was doing. This weird emotion came over me. Maybe of disbelief or maybe I'm just jumping to conclusion, but I felt a little hurt. I can see Caleb obviously flirting with some other guy who looks to be trying on hats. Caleb was standing pretty close to him and they were smiling too hard at each other. Great. I'm not just going to go over there. He knows I'm right here, so why do it in front of my face?
F.Y.E.
I wanted music I guess. I really wanted to be away from Caleb. My pocket vibrates and I'm expecting it to be Caleb. Instead it's Maurice telling me how he got thrown out of the mall but shall soon find his way back in. Cue in the rolling of the eyes. I walk through the store and look at CDs. I decided I was going to buy one, so I pick up The Weeknd's Kiss Land.
"Dope shit." I look behind me and Wes was just chillin' there.
"Where have you been?"
"At the food court. I was starving." He rolled his eyes dramatically and flipped his dark brown hair out of his eyes as he said this.
"Well everyone split up as you can tell." I walk over to the headphones and look at them without really looking at them.
"Yeah, I see. What happened?" I look at him chewing on his thumb nail.
"Well, it all started when you, Maurice, Mel, and Tangy left," I say to his face pretty loudly.
"Whoa! Not my fault, you guys are grown." He looks at his thumb hangnail. I just nod.
"Well at this point I'm getting bored and just might leave all of you." I turn and start walking towards the cashier's station.
"What about Caleb?" Wes asks behind me. I turn around to him and shrug. "Wait, can you go with me to Hot Topic, I want to get this one top." I then notice the bags that he was carrying.
"Sure. Let me purchase my CD."
SPENCER'S
Once at Hot Topic, I followed Wes around, then I went off in the store to do my own thing. He told me that Mel had texted him and that he was going to go find her. And that's how it started.
So Maurice, Ginger, and I decided to go to the next store over: Spencer's. Ginger perked back up from her Tangy depression and was swinging dildos around. I might need to buy a new one...
"Anybody got a lighter?" Maurice asks the store.
"Sir, you can't smoke in here," a big female with glasses and blue hair says from the store front.
"I'm starting to really wonder why we came here," I say as I stand by Ginger.
"We're hanging out, Ek." I look all around me.
"Oh, we're definitely hanging out all right," I say with sarcasm. Ginger shoves my arm and goes for the sexually graphic display of posters. I walk over to the books and flip through one that talks about all the different sexual positions. Some of the shit I never heard of or knew existed. I start to think about Caleb. We were new to each other still so we haven't had sex yet. I was a virgin (haven't had sex with another guy) but he wasn't. I wasn't too convinced when he told me that he'd never been with a female. Not even one? He just looks like the type that would have had a thing for girls in the past. He told me that he'd only been with three other guys before me. I took that info with a grain of salt. Even though I was upset about him and what I saw earlier, I still thought about losing it to him. He hasn't even texted me to know where I went.
"Yo, what ever happened to Caleb?" Ginger asks. She is just now asking. I stare at her for a good while and then decide not to answer her. It would be pointless. She really doesn't care. I move on over to the Chucky doll that is in front of the store. I'm staring up at it when I feel a presence behind me. Turning around I find out that it is Caleb's presence. He looks down at me and smiles.
"How did I figure that you would be in here?"
"You didn't, I'm sure it's just a coincidence." I move on pass him but he blocks my path.
"What's wrong?" He genuinely looks concerned.
"I saw you flirting with that guy at Lids," I don't hesitate to say.
"Flirting? I wasn't flirting with anybody." I just stare at him with a blank face for the longest time. "Eko," he starts. "I wasn't flirting with anyone. I lost you, I didn't know where you went. My only guess was that you might have been mad at me for not talking to you much today. I didn't text you because my phone died." he shows me it and its black screen. "So I went looking for you. I ran into Wes, Tangy, and Mel." He sounded sincere. He caught me off guard by wrapping his arms around my neck and holding me to him. I felt his kisses over my left ear and couldn't help but smile.
"Tangy!" It was Ginger's voice. Who else would yell out her name with a rage that was Ginger's voice. "You bitch!" We look as Ginger marches out of Spencer's and over to Tangy who was right outside the store.
"What's your deal?" Tangy questions.
"My deal? I saw you with another girl, Tangy!" Tangy rolls her eyes.
"C'mon babe, you know that's not true."
"So you're saying that I did not catch you in the food court holding hands and kissing some random chick?" Tangy just stood there, looking like the pothead she is. Ginger has been my friend for some time and she really doesn't know how to pick 'em.
"Whatever," is all Tangy says and then she walks away. Ginger doesn't even go after her. Shocker. I watch her just stand there watching Tangy walk away. I'm thinking that Ginger is a changed girl. No more chasing after her girlfriends or exes. But then she proves me wrong. In a blink of an eye she chases after Tangy.
"Oh, shit!" I say and go after her. She's fast and by the time I get to her she has Tangy by her hair and is punching her in the face.
"No bitch disrespects me!" Ginger's yelling. I run up on them and try to pull Ginger away.
AMERICAN APPAREL
"While you guys try and act like ya'll about that life, I'm going to be in American Apparel doing shit." I hear Maurice say. Caleb comes over and helps me.
"You crazy bitch!" For a second there I thought Tangy wasn't breathing or couldn't breathe because she's now just screaming. She's not even trying to fight Ginger. There are suddenly hands on me. I look over my shoulder and it's Maurice.
"Security coming," he says. I make one last pull for Ginger and we all move into Apparel with its bright clothing and alternative music. We're too quick for Tangy or the security. We all duck behind a rack or mannequin until the security guy is gone.
"I had enough of them for one day," Maurice exhales. I look at him.
"How did you get back in again?"
"Oh, nigga, it's simple, I went around the mall and came though another door, mall cops are the dumbest," he chuckles and shook his head while starting to roll a blunt. I look over to Ginger who was on the floor with her black tears again. I crouch down in front of her.
"It's pointless." She looks up at me.
"We gonna smoke or what?" I roll my eyes.
"No, Maurice. Go find your twin," I reply.
"Fancy seeing you guys here." I follow the voice and it's Wes with Mel right behind him. Good timing.
"She here, can we smoke now?" I stand up and Ginger follows.
"I'm done with this day," Ginger says.
"Where did you go?" I ask Mel. I can't even remember when we parted.
"I thought you guys would just be staying at Zumiez, I went to go get a frozen yogurt and I come back and none of ya'll niggas was in there. Had me all over, up and down this bitch," she says with a repulsed face. "I bought a new belt," she continues and swings her hips to the right to show us with a silly, happy look on her face. I didn't ask why she didn't just text me.
"Can we please...get high now?" I guess we were all here except for Tangy. I look at Caleb who looks back at me and shrugs. Turning to Maurice, I say, "Yes, we can get high now."
Oh and P.S. there was no point to this story.
